Tuberculosis is one of the infectious diseases caused by bacteria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The disease is transmitted from one individual to the other through the inhalation of the nuclei droplet produced by a laryngeal or pulmonary infectious person. The droplet nuclei are produced through laughs, coughs, talks, singing, or sneezing. If a non infected person breathes in the nuclei droplet, there is likelihood that the individual will become infected with tuberculosis. The incubation period of tuberculosis ranges from two to twelve weeks. The symptoms of this disease include; continuous coughing, fever, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fatigue, chills, bloody sputum, and diminished appetite (Melissa, 2005).

If an individual is exposed to a person with the disease and has never had the disease before, it is required that the individual should take a baseline test three months prior to the exposure date. The process should be repeated three months later if the results are negative (Melissa, 2005). Likewise, if an individual is exposed to an infectious person and had in the past been infected with tuberculosis, an individual is required not to take the tests but to wait for the symptoms then seek for treatment. When dealing with infectious individuals, a person is required to wear a mask for protection and ensure that the room is properly ventilated (Melissa, 2005).

Making the patients be at the same room will lead to higher risk of exposure to the flu. To reduce higher transmission of the flu, the patients should be; vaccinated, stay at home if sick, follow cough etiquette and hand hygiene, and strictly follow infection control practices (William, 2007). When infected with the flu, I will stay at home until the fever decreases then seek for medication.

Erikson considers that an individual develops on three levels; social, biological, and physiological (Erikson, 1968). These stages are important in the development and growth of an individual’s life. Like for example, during the adolescent period, identity of an individual is considered to be developed here. In comparison to the development a disease, patients at different stages of infectious exhibit various signs and symptoms and understanding these properties, one can handle or approach the patients with ease.

Summary

Learning infectious diseases has been of great importance in my life. I have been capable to learn on the various signs and symptoms of the common infectious diseases. To my concern, it is necessary to handle tuberculosis patients’ with proper care as one is at a risk of getting the disease. My favorite topic is the spread of Tuberculosis. This topic is of great concern to me as in most instances; many patients are not able to differentiate between flu and tuberculosis (Melissa, 2005).
