The internet has had a positive impact on the social life of many young people. According to Mesch (52), youths are using online communication tools to communicate with each other more compared to face-to-face communication. Many youths prefer to use these communication methods to communicate general information. It is clear that these methods of communication have reduced the need for cliques or other forms of youth groups. Youths no longer need to meet physically in order to share information. Consequently, the number of negative activities, which arise when youths socialize in cliques, has reduced substantially.

Furthermore, internet communication helps youths to expand their social relationships. This is because internet communication allows one to connect with quite a big number of people. In many cases, young people get to know people through their friends whom they communicate with online. Since young people easily form friendship with other young people, expansion of their social networks becomes easy and fast (Mesch 53).

According to Suzzane Martin, a researcher at Harris Interactive on youth and education matters, internet communication has changed the nature of adolescent relationships largely (Technology has Tremendous Impact on How Teens Communicate). Youths can now keep in touch with their school peers even after school thanks to internet communication. Through internet communication, youths can maintain friendship formed during adolescence even up to old age because the internet allows them to converse more constantly and from different locations in real time. This indicates that internet communication is helping youths to see the value of adolescence friendship.

Moreover, internet communication contributes to strengthening of initial face-to-face encounters between friends. This is because internet communication allows friends to post pictures of themselves, thus allowing their online friends to get some ideas about how they look like. By the time such friends are meeting for the first time, they already know how each other look like. This helps in avoiding things such as surprises, which can sometimes distort the friendship. Besides, internet communication has helped youths to develop greater sense of belonging. Through the internet, an individual can meet another individual who shares the same interests, and they become friends. Despite the time difference in many parts of the world, such people interact frequently via the internet as they share ideas and activities concerning their interests. This helps to strengthen the sense of belonging among young people (Technology has Tremendous Impact on How Teens Communicate).

The internet has also enabled formation of social groups such as Flash Mob. Flash Mob is organized over the internet through social media. Those on social media are able to meet as a group, briefly perform an artistic or unusual act, and then disperse.
